History of Fishries and Aquaculture

Prior to the birth of the Faculty of Agriculture on 8th of February, 2010, Fisheries and Aquaculture had been in existence dating back to 1990s under the Department of Zoology, Faculty of Biological Sciences, as an option at undergraduate level and Postgraduate programmes for Ph.D, M.Sc and PGD.

The Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Technology commenced with Prof. Nwuba, L. A. as pioneer Head of Department cum Sub-dean of the Faculty. The Department suffered a drawback that made her operate under the Department of Animal Science and Technology (AST) with Dr. Ikeogu, F. C. as Head of Fisheries Unit following delay in logistics to proceed on resource verification as a department.

Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Management provide specialized training and skilled manpower development for Fisheries subsector with the objective to provide food security, promote entrepreneurship, self employment and economic empowerment of the youth in Nigeria and across the globe and to encourage international collaborative research courses in Fisheries and Aquaculture. Also, it provide needed Manpower for Fisheries sector, Fish related Industries and Maritime sector of the economy.

The Academic staff are diligent, industrious and committed to making students to be dynamic in accommodating knowledge from other fields of learning eg (Health Sciences, Engineering, Management Sciences, Physical and Chemical Sciences as well as Arts). Her non-academic staff are amiable and approachable. The Technologists are there to guide the students in the Laboratory and in her integrated Organic Fish Farm.

The Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Management Postgraduate programme of Ph.D., M.Sc. and PGD were approved in 2014 by the school of Postgraduate Studies. The programmes are packaged to equip graduates with rare finesse and knowledge to solving peculiar problems beyond the strength of first degree and to conduct research.
